Orange & Barley Grass Smoothie

Orange & Barley Grass Smoothie

Drinking grass juice may not sound especially appealing, but we’re here to say the benefits are worth the acquired taste! Barley grass juice is loaded with chlorophyll and enzymes. Chlorophyll is cleansing and nourishing. And enzymes—like superoxide dismutase—can help to protect our cells from free radical damage and support metabolic function.  Barley grass juice is also infused with all twenty amino acids, making it a complete source of plant-based protein. Not to mention it’s jam-packed roster of vitamins and minerals including vitamin K and beta-carotene.

But who wants to go to the trouble of growing and juicing their own barley grass. Enter our Organic Barley Juice Powder. It’s as close to fresh as you’ll get—we cold press the juice then low-temperature dry it to preserve its nutrient density.  This powder is quite versatile, but one of our favorite uses is in a superfood smoothie (the perfect taste disguise too).

Keep in mind that even though barley GRAIN contains gluten, barley GRASS is gluten free. The grass is harvested before the grain sprouts so no gluten worries there. (Just make sure the manufacturer tests for gluten to be absolutely sure there is no contamination; we use the ELISA test on every batch of our product.)

We like to jumpstart our day with a chlorophyll-loaded grass juice smoothie. It’s also great post-workout. This recipe gives you the base flavors of banana and orange—a nice counter to the earthy grassiness of the Barley Juice. Bananas are rich in potassium, an important electrolyte, while oranges provide a nice kick of vitamin C.  The coconut milk makes this super creamy, but also balances the natural fruit sugars with healthy saturated fats to stabilize your metabolism. Hope you enjoy it as much as we do!
